New SFF Gamming Rig Idea

The Ninja Kid's picture

As some of you know I love SFF (Small Form Factor) cases, also some of you may remember I used to own a Shuttle X, the SN95G5 chassis. There are photos of it on the Krostech site.
Well that PC is no longer mine. I sold it to a friend a fair while ago now, and since have not really needed a high spec rig, so I have been running basic Intel© Pentium© 4 PC’s. They just don’t seem to cut it anymore, and as my current Machine has finally died I see this as a great time to upgrade to a:
‘High Power Gamming Rig’
I’ve never really owned a real Gamming rig before. The shuttle was the closest. Running a skt 939 3700+ x2 chip 1.5GIG memory and 256MEG graphics.
The thing keeping me of building a gamming rig is size, as I can’t seem to bring myself to own a full sized pc.
So now that I have decided to build a gamming rig, I have been looking around at parts and realised that I can still keep a rather small footprint even for gamming rig. I’m going to stay with SFF, but in the way of a Silverstone Temjin© TJ08 MATX (Micro ATX) case. The TJ08 takes a full size ATX power unit which is a must in a gamming system, and has enough room to fit the new Nvidia© 8800GTX series cards, which is surprising as not many mid towers can even accommodate the sheer size of the GTX series as they conflict with the hard drive bays.

Another advantage of the TJ08 is its cooling system, utilising all the spare space available to created the coolest possible environment, with a 12CM fan at the front (in the perfect place to cool a large video card such as the 8800GTX which I plan on putting in there) and a rear exhaust fan also 12CM located above where you would expect n any mid tower case. These two fans create a near perfect airflow cooling the system extremely well so I have read from many a review.

I still have not decided exactly on Main board or processor yet, I am inclined to stick with AMD as they have never led me wrong in the past and I have had so many troubles with these Pentium©4 computers.
If any of you have a MATX main board you would recommend that has PCIE 16x and GIG lan with onboard video and 8channel audio would be great thanks. The reason for wanting the onboard video and 8channel audio is simple, building a SFF PC you don’t have room for a aftermarket sound card (as much as I’d like a brand new X-FI©) and onboard video simply explained also, as I will be building the rig slowly and cannot afford a video card at this point in time and will be running onboard for a few weeks.

I plan to run dual 22” wide LCD panels, I’m opting for the LGE© L226WTQ-BF as it has 3000:1 contrast ratio, which basically blows me away. It was a tossup between that and the ASUS© VW222U with 2000:1 contrast ratio.

I estimate the full system to cost me around $3500.00 when completed. But to start the build I will only be spending around $600.00 to purchase CPU, Main board, Memory and the case.

Any thoughts or advice as to parts to consider would be greatly appreciated.

p.s. Don’t even try to change my mind about SFF it’s made up, for a few reasons. Number 1 reason is space, and as we all know SFF cases look freaking AWESOME!!!

sounds like an awesome

sounds like an awesome machine
personally i would steer clear of AMD and stay with teh dual core or better yet get a quad core intel chip
the 8800s require a massive amount of cooling
i have 2 8800GTX in a SLI and I ended up putting a larger server case fan on top of the cards to cool them. my case airflow just wasn't enough
let us know what you end up with and post some pics

Yeah, well ATM i am rather

Yeah, well ATM i am rather broke so the build wont start for a while, it will be starting now with an ASUS TM series case (micro ATX of course) some form of micro ATX mainboard probably an ASUS with WIFI, and a core 2 duo 2140 chip 200gig sata drive 8500 video gig of ram and dvd burner, just to start the build and parts will be upgraded from there

do you actually know how big

do you actually know how big those GTX's are? you need a full ATX case for one of those.
as for the OVERKILL factor, i'm running an AMD 4600+, with the lower memory 8800GTS, and every game i have (including recent games such as bioshock) run extremely smoothly at 1680x1050 on my 22" widescreen, (and i haven't been bottlenecked by the CPU), so you may want to tone down your spending. without the screen, this whole machine only cost me $1200.

$3500 is way too much for a computer of any sort. look for $2000 at the maximum, although add extra for the high contrast screens (mine is 800:1 and is perfectly good, but whatever)

EDIT: also, its "Gaming", not "gamming".

I do actually know how big

I do actually know how big the GTX cards are as many of my friends have them already and I have checked dimensions on the Silverstone TJ08 and ASUS TM series cases and both can fit the GTX as they don’t have and hard drive bays in the way, I looked and looked for a decent mid tower that i liked to fit them and couldn’t find one that I liked (I found many that could just not one that i liked the look of) and was surprised to find that both the uATX cases I was looking at could.

I have also seen a few builds on the internet with GTX cards in uATX cases and the GTX card fits better in the Silverstone TJ08 then most full tower cases as its a very deep case, and as for the ASUS TM series, you just remove the hard drive bay, as I wont need it, I’m only going to be running a single hard drive and single DVD drive now anyway.

As for your concern on cost, remember $1000 of that is monitor, I have had a look at the AMD chips that are out and am impressed but they have nothing on the C2D's and I am spending a lot on a main board that will be able to handle a top line Quad core eventually, even though my starting CPU is going to be bottom line.

The reason for the GTX card is simple, WHY THE HELL NOT!
just for laughs I mean a GTX card in a SFF PC, I like the idea, and really I could live with an 8600 card and never max it out anyway, but I feel like a GTX, but I wont be buying most parts for a long time.

The pc is going to start out with bare minimum and low spec parts, coz I’m broke really broke.

ATM I’m running a 3000+ skt 754 Semperon 1.5 gig ram and FX5200 video.

so basically anything is an upgrade lol

glad you realise how big

glad you realise how big those cards are
but add room at the front end for a 120 cm fan - and preferably one on the side of the case as well
800GTX cards run VERY hot.
I have 3 120mm fans, and a 120mm server fan running at about 8000rpm to keep my 2 cards cool

The Ninja Kid's picture

Yeah ive looked at cooling

Yeah ive looked at cooling and already decided on a 120mm fan at the front to cool the beast and was looking at a pci slot cooling card for the back side of the thing, slight mods to the pci cooler and case to fit it on the back of the car though.

but still atm im broke, im going to buy a 2140 and cheap mainboard soon and run them in a standard case i ahev lyring around till i have more money (obviously will be buying memory as well)

If any of you see any decent uATX cases around send me a link and also if you find any uATX boards you would recomend as im looking now at the ABIT Fatality series. . .

Hey Anyways, I don't know if

Hey
Anyways, I don't know if the admin realises, but he implied AMD doesn't even have dual core CPU's in the top post. They do, and price per performance, the AMD's absolutely kick Intel butt all the way to China, cept for the two best intel dual cores (and most expensive) which AMD has no competition for. In quad core, there is the quadfather for AMD... MMMMmmmm. Intel quads are ok atm, but AMD quads will be released hopefully in a month or two, and even if they aren't better, they will reduce Intels prices, as well as begin making them mainstream.
Now onto SSF.. Sorry, but i gotta laugh... I wouldn't get anything that could hold less then 8 drives, and 5 expansion slots.
And penguinboy, its great that you can build acceptable computers for yourself at $1200, but some people aim a bit higher. My current PC cost (over the four years I've had it) is around $4500. And I can still play a fair number of new games to market.
Ninjakid, you should probably get at least 2GB of ram (even if you have to buy it in separate 1GB sticks a few months apart) then just buying 1GB, especially if your considering Vista. RAM is also pretty much the cheapest upgrade to the PC.
Love the idea of a GTX in an SSF though:p
Enjoy.

yeah i do - i have a 4800+

yeah i do - i have a 4800+ dual core for sale - don't like AMD!
actually, probably more the AMD boards than the chip. Chip performs fine, just I have had lots of trouble with AMD boards.

The Ninja Kid's picture

It doesnt buy any chance

It doesnt buy any chance come with a pice uATX motherboard does it? lol

yeah i seem to haev the same issues though with AMD boards, and more so ASUS mainboards inparticular. . . .

but admitantly i do have an ASUS mainboard and AMD cpu atm. . .

"If I can't be beautifull I want to be invisible"

no mb sorry - thats why its

no mb sorry - thats why its for sale - the board is dead
but i do have 3gb of DDR RAM to go with it - 2 matched 1gb and 2 matched 512MB sticks - all Corsair good quality lifetime warranty stuff
not DDR2 though so wont go in a new board
make an offer

The Ninja Kid's picture

Is the chip an AM2? hmmm. .

Is the chip an AM2?

hmmm. . finding a AM2 uATX board that takes PCIe and DDR RAM lol that could be dificult. . .

ill have to wait untill ive sold my car, then i will start building the pc of my dreams lol

had it in a a8nsli

had it in a a8nsli board
http://www.mrgadget.com.au/catalog/asus-a8nsli-deluxe-motherboard-p-1037...
i think the board sux and so does everybody else i know who bought one - i had 2
however there should be similar boards that can take the chip
the 4800+ dual core is not am2 - its a socket 939 chip

The Ninja Kid's picture

I might know somone

I might know somone interested in teh Chip and the 2 1GIG sticks of DDR, the guy who bought my old shuttle pc its a skt 939 and hes only running 1GIG atm he gave the rest of his RAM away and its only a 3700+ ill tell him your selling them hes looking to get some more performance in teh lil shuttle, he is also looking at a better AGP card as it only has a 9600XT in it if you know anyone with something like a 6600 AGP card for sale also. . .

Ill pass the word on

"If I can't be beautifull I want to be invisible"

thanks

thanks

The Ninja Kid's picture

Thanks for the advice. My

Thanks for the advice.

My plan is to go with 4 gig eventualy and yeah i was going with 2 gig at the start of the build, i figuer going intel mainly coz i like the C2D's. . i like AMD and always have, but atm there not cutting it for me, oh and there are better uATX boards for intel chips then AMD chips.

If you can find me a good uATX mainboard for an AM2 chip which im sure there out there, for around 130 bucks id be happy to go with like a 4600+ chip or something, its jstu im aiming at building a budget pc that i can slowerly turn into a gaming rig. .

and the SFF is a must, everyone who knows me understands my obsesion with small but powerfull. .

look at my first car for instance a 12 second mini lol. . sadly to say its up fro auction on Ebay atm though. . *tear*

excuse my bad typing im really tired and busy dnt even know why im typing atm lol

but yeah GTX in an SFF its my new life goal lol

I just got bored and decided

I just got bored and decided to take a look at pricing on possible parts for the build. .

Altec Lansing FX6021Speaker system $245.00
Logitech G7 Cordless Laser Mouse $102.00
250G SATAII 7200 rpm HDD(16Mb Cache) $84.00 (boot drive)
500G SATAII 7200 rpm HDD(16Mb Cache) $155.00 (storage drive)
Albatron GeForce 8800GTX 768MB $696.00.00
SilverStone TJ08 Black Micro ATX Case $119.00
Vista Ultimate 64bit version $269.00
Intel CORE 2 Q6600/2.4Ghz/2x4MB/1066FSB/LGA775/QUAD CORE $369.00
Pioneer DVR-212BK 18x Dual Black OEM - SATA $45.00
DDR2 4G(2x2G)PC6400 800Mhz Heatspreader G.Skill $355.00
Thermaltake Tough power 1200W with PFC cable Management PSU $423.00
Razer Tarantula Gaming Keyboard $125.00
Intel DG33TLM LGA775/ mATX MB(OEM) $159.00

Asus ASUS VW222U 22 WIDE X2 $738.00 (coz i can!)

Total $3884.00

so looks like i better sell my car fast. . .

obviously parts will change for when i acctualy buy the pc, all those prices are Umart prices, and i most likely will buy from Umart so yeah. .

any aprts you want to critisize go ahead as that is jstu fro referance sake, i probably will end up with a GTS card instead anyway. .

and maybe with a C2D instead of C2Q probably go with a Abit Fataly MB isntead, maybe differant branded Memory. . . and maybe a single 24" LCD isntead of dual 22" LCD's atm im running dual 22" flat CRT's and i ahev another 4 indenticle ones in my cupboard best screenes ive ever used, pure flat Sony Trinitrons, Dell badged. better picture then most of my friends LCD pannels,

anyway that is all i have to say for now

administrator's picture

looks nice theres some

looks nice
theres some obvious money savers though
can the 64bit vista - dont need. cant use. too hard to get drivers for
(id recommend staying with xp pro for gaming unless you want endless issues or must have directx10) - further note the 8800GTX have had lots of driver issues with vista. I have only just got mine running stably after 6 months with the most recent beta drivers

the speakers - nice but your using this for lanning so get good headphones - spend $100 instead on good ones
get an ide dvd - frees up a sata port for extra drives later on - trust me on this
dont need 1200w psu for this beast - 600-800 should be fine
RAM is good - but if you go to xp no need to get 4gb as it cant use more than 3
that should save you a bit of dough

The Ninja Kid's picture

I like the idea of Vista 64

I like the idea of Vista 64 bit, mianly coz i want to run more then 3 gig of RAM as it wont only be a gaming platform but a video editing machine also i want to play DX10 games. i do plan on dual booting with XP Pro though. . .

ive decided that i will most likely end up with a GTS card for now anyway are the driver issues the same with them?

i have good headphones the speakers are for desk use at home as my 300W RMS ones are a lil bit bulky (custom made and damn are the loud and the quality is insane, they will move onto my media center setup though)

the power unit was simply a luagh there really, my plan is to use a silverstone 600Watt modular unit as it will mach the silverstone case.

i was mainly going for teh sata DVD burner for cable managment, IDE cables take up a lot of room in uATX cases as i have owned a few before. . .and looking at the layout of most mainboards and the fan possitioning int he case IDE cables could get rather anoying.

i also cut back to a single screen for now as i can use one of my CRT screens for my second monitor and gone down to a C2D E6750 instead of the quad core to save a little money, and i can always go to a quad core extreem when i can afford it untill then i can live with dual core. . .

ive decided to keep the build around $2000.00 as expenses on my car have just seemed to get in teh way, so sell one car fix the other, pay of debts and build a new pc, thats my plan. . .

also with the 4800+ chip if you could e-mail me your phone number i will pass it on to my friend, who some of you migth remeber from old Krostech LAN's MC-Skinky. . .

I hope to have my new SFF PC running in time for the Next LAN.
