Settlers of Catan was a hit at the 30 hour with several games being played.
The network version we have is 7mb and installs quickly.
It can take up to 6 players in a game with multiple maps available.
It is an excellent strategy game and given the complete lack of interest in Generals may well be the strategy game to play this year.
Make sure you get a copy and try it in February.

i would rather generals or even tiberian sun or dawn or red alert 2 or 1 or warcraft 3 or 2 or 1 or age of empires 3 or 2 or 1 or stronghold 2 or 1 or empire earth 2 or 1 or dawn of war or any other game other than that. but thats just my opinion.

or Age of Empires 1 or 2

How about dune 2 it is fun and if u cant pick it up easly u shouldnt be near a computer.
stronghold 1 crusader is the easist game to learn id be happy with aoe but not a c@c we have had them before

lets just say the probability of a war game to be WOW is the same as a steam game...
while we're on the topic, i can make it so we can play all the steam games over lan, but of course no-ones interested in that (btw: a strategy game is soon to be released on steam)

i could understand why you dont understand it though, as the particular language can be classified as '1337speak' (1337 means 'leet', as in 'elite') which means you have to be 1337 (leet, elite) to understand it

i have two things to say. one is on topic, the other not so much.
1. (this is the on topic one) I'm voting for c&c as a strategy game for a few reasons. mostly, its one i've actually played before! also it is easy to pick up and i just think its a good game.i hate playing strategy games with all these stupid little details, because unless you've played it before you really have no chance. as a sidenote, i think the results of strategy games are based on whoever has played the game the most and done the most research. (and yes i can see a lot of people arguing with me on this point).
2. this is not related. PB and rochie. if it irks you that much, dont read each others posts! its annoying having to scoll down a page of you guys snapping at each other.

I agree - the strategy games do come down to the person who has researxhed the most.
This puts warcraft and DOTA into the same category
Possibly even v8's in relation to vehicle setups and specific tracks
i would even go as far as to say games like UT2004 were very much in this category. For example Gunner and Viper used the species statistics mod and Adrenaline to good effect in 2005 because they knew the secrets about the game

Check the mission statement to see that what we encourage is playing the games you are good at and also the ones you ,to quote you, "have no chance" in.
So get good at one - or more - and then watch as Wayne's tournament system makes it an even a match as possible.

sorry online debating is a passion of mine and i cant leave an insult alone. (hopefully it wont happen again)
anyways c&c is the best rts for a war beacuse
1. easy to learn
2. most people know how to play/have played it
3. no mega-confusing details e.g. different races, wonders, etc.
hell, (can i say hell?) i would play tiberian sun as a war game! less resource-intent, and i played it with a few mods put on, it results in absolutely mad skirmishes - generals is too serious (i.e. real weapons, aircraft) for me.

May I add my 2 cents worth?

C&C had as many participants as Settlers of Catan at the last Raw War, however do not discount Rise of Nations to come back because a few people who were not at the last one will intend playing it at the next. We simply set up a server in each game and if no-one joins a particular one, then bad luck.

Basic games have their place as do games with different options. There is no problem with using different settings for games that are included in the standard menus (such as vehicle setups for V8 and adrenaline for UT). Although I must say that the adrenaline option certainly wasn't a secret because it was displayed on the screen during play. Species statistics also wasn't a mod - it's a standard option in the menu, just like low gravity used by other players. And all of these were only used at one Raw War before I stopped it because of complaints.

My final word is that some people will be better at some games than others so we need to just accept it and enjoy the game, whether we win or lose. Thanks Tegan for protraying that attitude in your messages. It's very sporting and much appreciated.

I'd go with either C&C or RON, much as I like stronghold 2, its just way too resource intensive for a decent map and a full scale battle. And I agree, C&C is pretty easy for learners.
